Some sole collectors look for rare kicks with extremely limited colorways. Others are not. Technology is always the case for that kind of heavy sneakerheads. This swarm of freaks is always following new, and interesting designs, e.g. formotion, shox, computer chip, Free and many many.
These days, Nike has unveiled its latest technology – Lunar Foam and Flywire. These brand new invention are embedded on the spotlight of bball shoe of the year – Nike Hyperdunk. Within this review, I’m going to share some POVs with you guys about the design, beauty, functionality and pros and cons about these shoes. Hopefully you guys would enjoy it and share your thoughts with me regarding this highlighted bball shoe.
Now let’s drop the shoes you currently hold on your hands and let’s get into the scoop of Hyperdunk
Appearance
Let’s start with the upper first.
When it comes to this part of Hyperdunk, the new technology FLYWIRE is got to be mentioned. In all, FLYWIRE is a kind of special thread made of special chemical compound. It greatly deducts the total weight of upper.
Meanwhile, Nike also claimed that the strength of FLYWIRE provides athletes the necessary protection on upper. It even plays a better role than traditional upper material. Athletes would benefit greatly from it.
Take a glimpse at the Hyperdunk on your hands, you would be attracted by the large portion of FLYWIRE which is embedded with a chunk of translucent poly urethane material. It is believed to be the most efficient eye catcher of Hyperdunk.
So now let’s leave the technology and check out the design. The total shoe tongue is made of mesh and it just provides a different visual impact comparing to the high-tech FLYWIRE upper. If you look into the translucent part on the upper, you will notice the whole inner sole is made of mesh, which surprisingly empower the comfort.
Then let’s check the heel part. The external heel counter is similar to the famous AJXX2. It not only plays a role of protection but also becomes an ad for Nike. However, instead of the double layer FLYWIRE in the heel, Nike builds an extended heel shank plate stretching right over to the middle of the shoe arch. I would consider this design as a reinforcement of the light and thin upper design. In this way the heel shank plate would also provides athletes with enough support of lateral moments. The extension from midsole to upper also helps a lot.
Oh in addition, Nike considerably puts a small swoosh logo on the lace head, which increase the total feel of this shoe.
Then let’s move on to midsole.
Cushioning technology is always the case of Nike shoes. Hyperdunk is embedded with zoom air unit in the heel and a cushioning pad in the forefoot. Moreover, apart from FLYWIRE, Nike also utilizes a new technology called LUNAR FORM.
Traditionally, Nike uses Phylon as a lightweight material to ease the burden of athletes while balling in their sneakers. This time, Nike has brought that concept up to next level. LUNAR FOAM amazingly reduces the total weight comparing to a traditional Phylon based sneakers. Let’s take the famous lightweight Nike sneakers Nike Zoom Kobe III for example. Zoom Kobe III in the US size 10 is 447 grams whilst Hyperdunk weighs 395 grams.
Like what has been mentioned above, the extension from midsole to upper devotes itself to the stability as well.
Thirdly, the outsole.
Interestingly, Nike didn’t use the widely adopted herringbone pattern on Hyperdunk but to use a horizontal pattern. You can also see the similar element on Zoom BB and Zoom BB II if you would notice the circle on the forefoot.
Hyperdunk also has carbon fiber shank plate for the stability of midsole. This design seems to become a MUST for all flag ship models of Nike. You would also notice the outrigger for enhancing athletes’ lateral moments when balling.
Experience
Since my friends “e” and “k” have mentioned that this is going to be a pair I love I’ve been craving to put them on. Fortunately enough, I’ve tried them last week and would like to share some ideas with you guys.
When I firstly put Hyperdunk on, my feet were perfectly surrounded by the inner mesh sleeves. The comfort was just sweet. After I tightened the laces with 10 eyelets, the support was so obvious while Hyperdunk didn’t sacrificed the agility of moving. I think this is probably caused by two deep cuts of the translucent upper portion. In addition, you better wear middle-high socks to protect your shins when you ball in Hyperdunk for the first few times.
The selling point of lightweight is definitely a success. Sometimes I don’t even know if I was balling with a pair of bball shoes or running shoes. Somehow Hyperdunk really increase my speed in the game.
The translucent upper portion is a bit stiff when running back to court. The feeling is just like when you are folding a thick paper card. However, when you concentrate on the game you will not feel the difference.
The cushioning performance is pretty enough for me. Normally I played small forward in the games with my friends and the zoom air unit in the heel provides me with enough shock absorbent ability and fast responsive performance. I wouldn’t stick to the hardwood with Hyperdunk.
The cushioning pad in the forefoot puts me low profile to the ground. I benefit the fast first move and hard cut from it. However, there’s one question that some people say the cushioning pad is just the so-called LUNAR FORM whilst the other folks say it is not, and it seems that no one has the correct and confirmed answer about it. If you have the answer and the correct source, please kindly let us know.
As to the lateral moment support, I have to admit that I didn’t feel too much from FLYWIRE, and, it seems that Nike didn’t emphasize that benefit a lot but lightweight. However, I do feel the support from the extraordinary long internal heel counter and the extension midsole to the upper. I can make hard cuts with them without hesitations.
Even if the traction is not you-all-love-me herringbone pattern but the performance is nice. I don’t feel the difference between the herringbone pattern and the pattern we have on Hyperdunk. However, concerning about the durability, I’m a bit afraid that the depthless pattern would be vanished pretty fast.
Summary
1. Ankle Support
The support is nice with the extra high upper with 10 eyelets. If you put your Hyperdunk on with all 10 eyelets tightened up, you will feel pretty secured. In addition, the external and internal heel counter also help a lot.
2. Traction
Although it’s not herringbone, the traction is still nice on hardwood.
3. Comfort
With the all-mesh inner sleeves you can feel the total cover when you ball in it. The confort has been greatly elevated by this design.
4. Resonsiveness
The cushioning pad in the forefoot provide very fast responsiveness and low to the ground. The zoom air unit in the heel gives athletes enough shock absorbent ability to protect you from harm.
5. Durability
The traction is somehow a bit depthless. That would probably cause a shorter lifetime when you ball with them outdoors.
6. Weight
What can I say. If you think 395 grams for a single shoe in US 10 is not good enough, I think currently there’s no bball shoes on he market can satisfy you.
7. Overall
This is a great bball shoes for SG and SF. Hyperdunk is extremely light, comfy and functional no matter you are talking about performance or appearance. I really wanna give Hyperdunk a full score but seems sneaker companies are inventing hot new stuffs day and night, I think 9.8 points pretty much describe my feeling toward Hyperdunk.
Afterword
I’ve been stop writing reviews for a long while. One of the reasons is that I haven’t been deeply moved by sneakers for a long time. However, Hyperdunk has successfully touched my heart.
If you are a speedy shooting guard or a game terminator with strong desire of attacking the rim, I strongly suggest you trying Hyperdunk for your own good. Hyperdunk will bring you up to the next level.

If I were to make a basketball shoe
what would it look like?
how would it feel?
the shoe should be an extension of the player
it should be built to work with me
not against me
be as quick as I am
while at the same time, be as strong as I am
if I were to make a basketball shoe
it would be like nothing you've ever seen before
